Leading the restoration efforts is Woods Bagot, whose meticulous vision celebrates Shell House’s interwar palazzo-style architecture. Central to the transformation is the Menzies Bar & Bistro, where Pelle Leathers’ Toledo range in Ultra (4517) was chosen to elevate the custom banquette seating. This deep burgundy leather, reminiscent of a fine red wine, beautifully complements the venue’s black and white marble flooring and sculptural steel bar.
The Toledo leather, with its vacuum-dried wax finish, offers unparalleled depth of colour and a warm, inviting texture. Over time, the aniline leather develops a unique patina, enhancing its character and blending seamlessly with the venue’s rich palette of textures. This thoughtful choice underscores the design’s emphasis on sophistication and comfort.
Shell House’s layered history adds to its allure. Once home to the German Club in the 1880s and later the Menzies Hotel, the building’s iconic glazed terracotta façade now frames 1600 square meters of indoor and outdoor spaces, redefining hospitality in the city.
Woods Bagot’s design is a masterclass in storytelling. Each detail narrates a chapter of Shell House’s past and present, from the tessellated black-and-white tiles inspired by underground railway canteens to the curated mix of bespoke furniture and natural materials.
The Point Group, renowned for venues like The Dolphin Hotel, has solidified Shell House as a jewel in Sydney’s dining scene. With its legacy and luxurious reimagining, Shell House celebrates heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary hospitality.
