Tasmania Pod is Alice Hanson’s ultimate Tasmanian sanctuary. Alice wanted to showcase the creativity and originality of Tasmanian artists, designers and craftspeople, creating a dream home that is a “love letter to Tasmania,” as Grand Designs Australia host Peter Madison described.
Alice engaged studio Bury Kirkland Ferri for the interior design of the 40-square-metre coastal home, bringing together bespoke elements from more than 15 local artisans, including Simon Ancher Studio’s custom Tailored couch upholstered in Pelle’s Nevada leather. The Tailored sofa takes pride of place in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows and suspended fireplace, which is the focal point of the home.
The sofa is designed like a cocoon or nest for Alice to curl up in and enjoy the warmth of the fire of stunning view. Simon looked to boat building and barrel-making techniques for inspiration, and designed the timber frame with soft rounded corners along its edge and a faceted shape at the rear.
Nevada leather is a pull up aniline leather produced on European hides. It has a textural quality and aged, distressed appearance due to the blend of oil and wax applied to the surface. Dusk provided the perfect shade of black – “not too dark, not too light,” says Simon – to contrast and complement the timber. “It’s a darker, blacker tone but without the heaviness of a solid black,” Simon explains.
Mattila Studio crafted the fireplace, which is suspended in front of the floor-to-ceiling view of Frederick Henry Bay, the Southern Ocean and surrounding dunes. Tasmania Pod also features furniture by Alan Livermore Design and Dare by Design; custom glazes and ceramics from Lindsey Wherrett; and vases from Scott Van Tuil.
Tailored Pod featured on Grand Designs Australia in August 2019.
