The new Melbourne headquarters of David Jones and Country Road Group tells an Australian design story. Designed by Gray Puksand, it is inspired by the country’s natural landscapes and uses ethical, sustainable products from local suppliers, including our Vienna leather.
The new workspace consolidates two of Australia’s retail-fashion icons in a 25,000-square-metre building. It is a modern, light and comfortable environment that celebrates the unity of David Jones and Country Road Group while showcasing their individual brand identities. It also supports WHL Group’s Good Business Journey plan to become one of the world’s most environmentally and socially responsible retailers.
The Gray Puksand design team looked to Australia’s diverse natural features for inspiration and created a design concept and palette aligned with the premium quality of the two brands. This includes sophisticated neutrals, such as greys and taupes, with soft pink, green and yellow highlights.
Pelle’s Vienna leather range in colour ‘Bisque’ features on the banquette seating booths in the casual working and collaboration space. The seating required a durable leather for longevity, and a soft hand for comfort. Vienna is a full grain South German semi-aniline leather that expresses its natural characteristics and variations. It is evenly coloured with a light layer of pigment added to the surface, protecting the leather from food and drink spills.
The leather upholstery on the back of the booth has been quilted for additional comfort, and the diamond pattern provides visual interest and texture.
Vienna also meets the ethical standards of WHL Group’s Good Business Journey plan for the sustainable design and production of fashion to make a positive environmental and social impact on the world. Gray Puksand specified local, ethically sourced products in line with this vision, as well as eco-friendly finishes that promote end-of-life recyclability.
As a GreenTagTM-certified leather, Vienna is independently endorsed as being safe to use (friendly to the health of people and the environment), fit for purpose (durable) and processed through an ethical supply chain (sustainable). It is sourced from a highly respected South German tannery that strictly adheres to global best-practice environmental standards.
